Built in 1938 the Rio has been fully restored with a state of the art digital projector, surround sound, a huge stage for live events and 420 of the most comfortable brand new luxury seats (with adjustable arms in case you’re on a date). , The Good News, The Heard, Hannah Gerogas and others, fashion shows, The International Burlesque Festival and the Vancouver International Comedy Festival, featuring Janeane Garofalo. Plus a recent sold out show by Paul F. Tompkins. The Live Theatre musical stage show Pink Floyd The Wall.
Movies: In addition to our Hollywood blockbusters, the Rio features Cult Classics every Friday at 11pm. This is your chance to see your old favorites on the big screen. The late night crowd comes for the live hosts and pre-show entertainment as well as the thrill of dressing up in a party like atmosphere. We screen 35mm prints (when available). The Rio is also home to the “Spike and Mike’s Sick and Twisted Animation Festival” plus screenings of local independent filmmakers.
Live Satellite: UEFA Euro soccer, the Olympic opening and closing ceremonies from Beijing, and Pangea Day, a global event that simultaneously broadcast short films, live music and visionary speakers. Over 400 people watched President Obama’s inauguration live at the Rio Theatre.
